The Pelvic Girdle and Lower Limbs

THE PELVIC GIRDLE AND LOWER LIMBS

The pelvic girdle consists of two bones, the fused coxae or innominate bones. Anteriorly, the two hip-bones are connected by fibrocartilage at the pubic symphysis.

Posteriorly, they are joined to the sacrumand coccyx of the axial skeleton at the sacroiliac joint. The pubic symphysis, the two hipbones, and the sacrum and coccyx combined form a basinlikebony pelvis.

The bones of the pelvic girdle and lower limbs are larger because they incur greater stress. The lower limb consists of the femur, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
